Undiluted test samples of Suncor waste-water lethal to fish: Alberta

Source: Globe and Mail

Suncor Energy Inc.The toxic water spilled by Suncor Energy Inc. into the Athabasca River would have killed aquatic life if it had been undiluted, according to the Alberta government.

The province on Friday provided a glimpse into its investigation of the March 25 spill, saying the samples of the company’s undiluted industrial waste-water were lethal to fingerling rainbow trout. These water samples, however, are not comparable to the fluid that poured into the river because they do not account for dilution. Alberta is still investigating whether diluted samples are harmful.

OTTAWA—Stephen Harper’s pipeline preacher has not lost any of his zeal.

Joe Oliver takes to his pulpit daily, spraying statistics and “fact-based” arguments at his opponents, refusing to be slowed by recent heart surgery, perhaps the loudest and most determined environmental protest ever mounted on both sides of the border or native leaders who promise a long, hot summer followed by potentially years of court challenges.

In a 62-37 vote late Friday, the US Senate passed a non-binding amendment calling for the approval of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline.

Environmental groups and climate activists were quick to condemn the vote, but said the “symbolic vote” was valuable because it revealed which members of the Senate have received the message on the seriousness posed by climate change and which continue to bend to the demands of industry lobbyists.

Keystone XL pipeline maker TransCanada has broken rules, says National Energy Board

Source: Financial Post

CALGARY — The National Energy Board says it’s concerned Calgary-based pipeline giant TransCanada Corp. has broken the regulator’s rules, as well as its own.

A then-employee of TransCanada approached the board in May with concerns of “regulatory non-compliance,” the NEB says in a letter posted on its website.

The letter was addressed to Dan King, vice president of engineering and asset reliability, and copied to CEO Russ Girling and Don Wishart, executive vice president of operations and major projects.

In it, the board did not specify which rules were broken or which pipeline or project was involved.

Alberta buys $30 000 New York Times ad to promote Keystone XL tar sands pipeline

By: Obert Madondo | The Canadian Progressive | Mar 19, 2013:

Alberta Keystone XL Ad New York Times

Last week, the New York Times boldly urged President Barack Obama to reject TransCanada’s Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. The influential paper’s March 10 editorial immediately drew the ire of the Canadian petrostate and its Conservative foot soldiers.

Alberta Premier Alison Redford responded over the weekend by purchasing the above $30 000 ad in the New York Times ad to promote Keystone XL. According to The Canadian Press, a spokesman for Redford said the ad was “taken out to counter” the NYT editorial.

Keystone XL pipeline not good for Canada, opposition leader suggests

SOURCE: Guardian (UK)

Thomas Mulcair criticises Canada’s Conservative government and says pipeline is exacting heavy environmental cost

Canada‘s opposition leader spoke out against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline during a visit to Washington on Wednesday, breaking with the Canadian government’s full-on lobbying push for the controversial project.

In appearances around Washington, Thomas Mulcair, the leader of the New Democratic Party, was scathing of the Conservative government’s environmental record and strongly suggested – without saying so explicitly – that he does not believe the pipeline is in Canada’s interest.
