TransCanada and the provincial government of Alberta are paying former advisors to the Obama administration – as well as former staff of the Hillary Clinton and John Kerry presidential campaigns – to help them lobby for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline to transport tar sands fuel to the U.S.

The pipeline from Alberta – which is to be built by TransCanada – has been delayed for over four years pending approval from the U.S. State Department which has final say because it crosses the international border. President Barack Obama is expected to announce a decision this fall in consultation with John Kerry, who took over the State Department earlier this year from Hilary Clinton.

Harper Conservatives spend on Keystone XL ads, while cutting environment funding

CEP LOGOOTTAWA, May 27, 2013 – “Canadians should be outraged that the federal government is shoving millions of taxpayer dollars into American advertising to  promote Keystone XL,”  says Dave Coles, President of Canada’s largest energy workers’ union.

The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada has learned that since 2010-11 Natural Resources Canada has increased its advertising budget by 7000%.

One of Canada’s most senior politicians is back in Europe on yet another lobby tour to try and bully politicians there to ditch their landmark climate legislation as it discriminates against the dirty tar sands.

Joe Oliver, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, will tour Paris, Brussels and London this week.

A key focus of his tour will be the EU’s flagship Fuel Quality Directive (FQD), which the Canadians  have been trying to derail for several years now, using a mix of lobbying, bullying, and open trade threats.

The Canadians have forced the FQD to be delayed time and again, and if the legislation gets delayed beyond the end of this year, it may be abandoned all together. It is no surprise that when in Brussels, Oliver will meet with senior officials from the European Commission as well at bosses from oil giants Shell and Total, which have interests in the tar sands.

WASHINGTON – New research from Oil Change International today (March 22) found that the 10 Senators co-sponsoring the pro- Keystone XL Pipeline Amendment (Hoeven Amendment 494) in the Senate today have on average taken $807,517 from the fossil fuel industry. That works out to 254% more money than the average Senator not sponsoring the amendment, and a total haul of over $8 million dollars, based on data from DirtyEnergyMoney.org.

Canada is tarnishing its green image by lobbying on behalf of tar sands, labelled in the EU’s proposed revision of the Fuel Quality Directive as more polluting than conventional oil sources, said Indigenous Chief Bill Erasmus, in an interview with EurActiv.

Bill Erasmus is regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations and the national chief of the Dene, a Canadian indigenous group. He spoke by phone from Germany to EurActiv’s Marc Hall. This interview was edited into a shorter form.

Alberta buys $30 000 New York Times ad to promote Keystone XL tar sands pipeline

Last week, the New York Times boldly urged President Barack Obama to reject TransCanada’s Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. The influential paper’s March 10 editorial immediately drew the ire of the Canadian petrostate and its Conservative foot soldiers.

Alberta Premier Alison Redford responded over the weekend by purchasing the above $30 000 ad in the New York Times ad to promote Keystone XL. According to The Canadian Press, a spokesman for Redford said the ad was “taken out to counter” the NYT editorial.

The United States is already Alberta’s biggest customer for our oil. The Keystone XL pipeline will further cement the strong bond between Alberta and the U.S. and is important in developing a safe, secure North American energy partnership.
