It was the worst pipeline spill ever on American soil, a disaster regulators say was brought on by the recklessness of pipeline giant Enbridge.
But Canada’s National Energy Board will ignore those findings in deciding the fate of an Enbridge pipeline in Ontario that could bring oilsands oil here and to the American east coast.
The board’s decision angered landowners along the pipeline from Sarnia to west of Toronto.
Some accuse the board of being more concerned with Enbridge’s profits than with farms and rivers that would be in harm’s way should the pipeline burst.
“(The board) is in the pockets of the companies,” said Margaret Vance, president of the Ontario Pipeline Landowners Association.
